Not actually inspired by the film Troy, this is still a nice little offering from Ares.
Cast in White Metal, the sculpting is detailed and exact, with plenty of detail for the painter to bring out. The castings are very clean, with very restrained part lines. Joints are good and in logical places, there should be little or no filler necessary to make these seamless.
The only catch might be the face, enclosed as it is in the helmet; certainly the eyes will have to be approached carefully, although I don’t see how the sculptor could have gotten around doing the piece any other way.
A reasonably nice piece of groundwork is supplied for a change ( well, so many juts give subjects from hot countries an almost featureless flat base ), this one’s actually worth using, although some modellers might want to expand on it a bit.
Because of the gap in history, Troy having been wiped off the face of the earth, the painting can be fairly open to what the modeller wants, and possibly this piece might be attractive to the fantasy modeller, as the armour and minimal clothing could be used to depict a barbarian, albeit from a rather warm climate. The separate helmet crest allows for the moulded piece to be used, or for the modeller to add his or her own with a little modelling putty – a small personalisation of the kit that might attract some.
A nicer than average model that deserves to be noticed.
Thanks to Matt and Celine at El Greco for supplying the review sample.
