Dwarves – stumpy characters that are even smaller to paint……But on the plus side, they’re chunkier too !
Once upon a time, it used to be a choice from the Ral Partha catalogue, and a slim choice at that. Now there’s loads of Dwarf figures to choose from, but this range should figure ( sorry, pun intended ) high on your list of considerations.
Actual height of casting ( to the top of his head ) is 27mm, although once assembled, to it’s highest point, it’ll be 35mm. There’s a tab running across the bottom of the feet too, but I’ve not included this in the measurements.
Sculpting is very good, although it will probably take a wash of dark paint to bring all the details to light. Certainly there will be chances to lavish a lot of care on the flesh areas, with the addition, should the painter choose, to add tattoos and scars. Moulding, again this is good and clean. There are mould part lines as with all metal castings, but they’re pretty easy to find as the model will only sit one way when laid on a flat surface, and the part lines will be approximately half way up and on a roughly horizontal line through the model level with the surface it’s on – have I explained that well, possibly not !

Basically, the mould lines will run down the sides of the model, and on this piece were restrained but visible running over the lateral muscles down the side of the chest and running up the line of the triceps muscle on the right arm.
The face might be a little troublesome to paint, although a lot is hidden by the beard. The raised arms frame the face and will make access with a brush a little more problematical than if they were down at his sides.
Overall though, a good sculpture, with casting to back it up. Fit of the separate hands / axe is good, and I doubt that filler will be necessary at all to hide the joint.
Whilst this is primarily a wargaming figure, as painter, I think it’s one that could be used well to display painting prowess, and to be honest, it’s a shame that these models get bounced around a wargames table, having chips and dents put in them……so says a man with all the tactical awareness of a house plant…..Which is why I paint and don’t game.
